Hebaska

ALMA WINTER ARTS WEEKEND: Sat 30th Nov, 2024 — Sun 1st Dec, 2024. ‘Hebaska’ an installation was accompanied by violinist Juliet Walshe.

Hebaska is both the Cornish word for calm and new work that transformed the Fly Loft, a cavernous space previously used for storing pilchards, above Newquay Harbour. The installation was a re-working of the organza originally exhibited in a collaborative installation Sound Solid Liquid Light, shown at Two Queens, Leicester, earlier this year with artists SJ Blackmore, Naomi Frears and Alice Mahoney. This installation was accompanied by violinist Juliet Walshe. During this installation, the public were invited into the fly cellars, a (usually locked) cavernous storage vault built into the rocks overlooking Newquay Harbour. Exposed to the elements, the voluminous fabric billowed and breathed with the wind, enveloping the viewer and dramatically changing the context of the space. The mass of material together with the sound of the violin acted as a a porous veil to the sea, offering a cocoon, a sanctuary.

Alma’s Winter Arts Weekend was on the closing weekend of Be Newquay Festival, curated by Cornwall Council project ‘Experience Newquay’ in collaboration with local project partners Love Newquay and Visit Newquay. It was part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
